Transformation to Vista >> New ways of browsing, tweaking and fixing your Windows registry (Virtual Registry Editor)

Windows 95 featured a brand new architectual concept: important windows, hardware and software information or settings were no longer saved within .inf-files but within this extensive registry database. You can adjust hundreds of aspects, tweaks and fixes of your Windows operating system by creating or changing values. What you need now is a more clearly laid out interface to make changes to the core of Windows easier. The free Registry explorer is a fine tool to display registry information like the Windows explorer does:

Windows Registry Explorer: it cant be simplier than that!

1. Download Registry Explorer from this page (see Full setup, 1.4 MB) and install this little masterpiece.

2. After you have installed Registry Explorer, start it. Double-click HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, Software, Microsoft, Windows, CurrentVersion, Policies, Explorer one after another.

Notice: Most books and sites display it like this: Registry\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer.

3. You will see the (default) value and propably some other values like NoDriveTypeAutoRun (which prevents the CD/DVD drive to autostart setups or welcome screens after you have inserted a disk).

4. Right-click on an empty area within this window and select New/DWORD value. Name it NoRecentDocsMenu , double-click on this value and enter 1. This is just an example of the thousand possibilities the registry has to offer - after a restart this value causes the start menu item My Recent Documents to disappear and to be completely inaccessible.

Need to know more about the Registry Explorer? Click Registry Explorer/Getting startet and cast an eye on this extensive guide!
