Windows XP - Remove the hidden system software

November 25, 2013
Updated: December 6, 2021
Quick overview:

Windows XP comes with software such as the "Accessibility Wizard, games, mouse pointer, wallpaper etc.", which cannot be deactivated during installation as usual (from Windows 95/98/ME) or removed later under "Add or Remove Programs" in the Control Panel. Many of these tools are unnecessary and also take up hard disk space. To reduce the load on your Windows in this respect, proceed as follows:

1. make hidden files visible in XP

Under Windows XP, open "My Computer". Click on "Extras" > "Folder options" click. To the tab "View" switch. Stop after the entry "Hidden files and folders" and click directly below on "Show all files and folders". If the option is already activated here, everything is fine. Otherwise, click and confirm with "OK" button to confirm. The file we are looking for is a hidden file - you can repeat the step after the tip and click "Hide hidden files and folders".

2. open the "sysoc.inf" file

Click now on "Workplace" > "C:\" > "WINDOWS" > INF. Now shut down until you find the file sysoc can see. Double-click on it - the text editor appears with the contents of the file. Click on full screen for a better overview!

3. remove the word "hide" everywhere in this file

At the top of the bar, click on "Edit" > "Search..." and enter in the command line "hide" field. Move the search window to a free space by holding down the mouse button so that the words are not covered. Now click on "Continue searching". The first "Hide" is highlighted in blue. Delete it...click on "Continue searching" and delete all "Hide"'s from the file until "Hide cannot be found" appears. Example:
Before: "AccessUtil=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,accessor.inf,HIDE,7"
After: "AccessUtil=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,accessor.inf,,7"

Close the window and confirm with "YES" that you would like to save.

4. remove the software in the control panel

Open it by clicking on "Start" the "System control". Double-click on "Software"! Click on the lower ("Add/Remove Windows Components") symbol - after a short time the window will appear in which you can scroll down and click on "Accessories and utilities" twice. Another window appears.

Here you can uncheck all accessory programs that are not required, such as the mouse pointer or calculator, and then click "OK". In the other window, click again on "OK" then click on "Next". After a short time, Windows has deleted the components. Now with "Finish" finish
