Quick overview:
Revival - the best PC games of the 90s
It is well known that video games experienced many highlights in the 90s. There was a special development in many respects. This applies not only to the console market, but also to the PC sector. Today's world-famous shooters, strategy games and action adventures made their debut on the PC and were played by millions of gamers.
For this very reason, certain titles in the following list deserve a special mention. This article looks at some PC games from the 90s that were (and in some cases still are for many fans) absolute favorites. Passionate gamers may even discover a game or two here that they have always wanted to play!
Age of Empires
Many game series experienced their breakthrough in the 90s. Many of them are still well-known today. Age of Empires is clearly one of them. This strategy game fascinated with its many playable nations, which in turn represented different cultures. Especially when constructing cities, buildings and units, it was possible to recognize which cultures were involved and how they were characterized in a special way. A total of four periods are available in this strategy game, through which the player can travel from antiquity to the Middle Ages. The mining of various resources has remained an important part of the series, but the focus is on the battles. This is where many units come together, initially consisting of clubmen, later swordsmen, archers, mounted units and even catapults. Work is currently underway on Age of Empires 4. If you want to pass the waiting time a little, you can of course try out other games until then. Free spins are highly covetedwhen it comes to trying out new genres or sequels.
The settlers
The Settlers is also clearly a strategic PC game. This series is still well-known today and continues to impress with its extraordinary and intuitive city building. The focus here is not on battles, but on a functioning economic system. The player deals with various building sites, ore mines, residential buildings and warehouses. The bustling and eponymous settlers take care of all aspects of their settlement. However, it is up to the player to place the buildings correctly and strategically so that many goods can be produced and processed in a short space of time. Ultimately, the goal is usually to conquer your opponent's settlements. The principle has been successful time and again and there are now many offshoots of this video game series. Developer Blue Byte is currently working on another game, which will simply be called "The Settlers". Whether this will happen in the course of Gamescom will provide further clues remains to be seen.
Diablo
Diablo also originally started out on the PC. It was a game that was great fun to play with friends. Dark vaults, dungeons, caves and deep forests, overrun by dark creatures, are waiting to be explored and fought by the player. The exploration and combat character is at the forefront of Diablo. The aim here is to fight your way through hordes of enemies and hope for special items to strengthen your character. At the start of the game, the player decides on a specific character class and thus determines their individual abilities. Since Diablo 3, the series has been on everyone's lips again, with Blizzard reportedly already working on the fourth series spin-off works. If you don't want to wait that long, you can of course also try, Part 3 still needs a little tuning.
Half-Life
At the end of the 90s, Half-Life appeared on the market, a shooter that was to turn the entire genre on its head. With this product, Valve created a game that was to have a decisive impact on many games that were still to come. In the game, the player takes on the role of MIT physicist Gordon Freeman. An accident quickly occurs at his research station in the form of a rocket test base, which opens several dimension gates and allows some aliens access to Earth. Special at the time: the entire game takes place from Freeman's perspective. Elements from other genres can also be found. Among other things, puzzle passages are not uncommon in Half-Life. This gave rise to several other series, such as Counter-Strike or Portal, which are also among the best-known PC hits today.
Rollercoaster Tycoon
The construction game Rollercoaster Tycoon barely made it into the 90s. Here, however, the player does not build a settlement or town, but an amusement park. The many rollercoasters, which can be designed entirely by the player, naturally gave the game its name. Predefined variants were also available, but it was much more fun to decide for yourself when the next curve or the first loop should appear. In addition to the roller coasters, the player also took care of the day-to-day business. He set up various attractions, food stalls, paths and toilets. He also took care of the staff. After all, cleaners and supervisors were also needed to keep the hustle and bustle of the park under control. The rides were varied and over time a flourishing amusement park developed... self-built. When people think of "self-build" and "gaming" today, they often think of the possibilities, his gaming PC optimally to its requirements. Nevertheless, they still exist today: PC games in which you can create and play your own worlds at a very high level.
