Smartphone users may still have to wait months for the update - developers already have access to Windows Phone 8.1 In just a few steps, we explain here how anyone can test the new Windows operating system for smartphones.
Step 1: Register on the App Studio website
To download the Windows Phone update 8.1, you have to go to the App Studio website and click on the "Start new project" button. You must now register as a "developer" to receive your account details. They are valid for the one-time, free download of the update software to your own smartphone. Important: An existing Microsoft account is required, which must also be registered on the smartphone on which 8.1 is to run.
Step 2: download the app
After registering, visit the Windows Store on the intended smartphone and install the "Preview for Developers" application from there. The app should run on any Windows Phone, regardless of the manufacturer.
Step 3: Enter user name and password
After starting the app, it is necessary to enter the password and user name of the previously created account. Three major updates are then downloaded and installed, including Windows Phone 8.1. The installation should not take longer than three quarters of an hour. Then 8.1 can be used, including almost all functions - only the newly presented "Lockscreen" is not yet included.
Step 4: Show willingness to take risks
Anyone downloading such a developer version for testing should be aware of certain risks: there is no way back to Windows Phone 8 until the first update for the 8.1 OS, and previously used drivers are also deleted.
It is possible that only some of the previously used functions can be used, and the smartphone manufacturer's warranty conditions may also be breached under certain circumstances - which may mean that you no longer receive support.
If you want to be on the safe side, you should therefore have a second smartphone at the start.
