Video games have undergone a major transformation in the last decade. On the one hand, the variety of genres has grown enormously, and on the other, plot and dramaturgy have become much more important. A good AAA title therefore now not only has bombastic gameplay and strong graphics, but also has a lot to offer in terms of story. Game developer Telltale brought out a series of exciting games in which players could influence the course of the story by making decisions and solving puzzles. The studio closed its doors in 2018 and that seemed to be the end of Telltale Games. However, LCG Entertainment bought up most of the licenses and will now even continue to develop an incomplete project: The Wolf Among Us 2. Will it be the last Telltale title?

Popular card games as a starting point

In 2005, the video game studio Telltale launched its production with a simple title that managed to attract a large player base at the time. The game *Telltale Texas Hold’em* became just one of several virtual poker games that the developer released over the years. At that time, most casino games were still limited to land-based casinos, which is why the digital card game was so well received. Today, card games like poker and blackjack are regularly played online, often through online casinos where real-money bets can be placed. However, many platforms offer free spins with no deposit required, allowing new users to try out different games risk-free. The extensive game libraries include various versions of popular table games, as well as numerous slots with different designs and themes. For the development studio, this marked its first step into the gaming world.

Development towards the adventure genre

Following its success in the poker genre, the studio ventured into its first episodic adventure games, in which the storyline took center stage. The developers took on popular TV series and movies, adapting them into titles such as *CSI: 3 Dimensions of Murder* and *Wallace & Gromit's Grand Adventures*. With the support of LucasArts, the highly successful game *Tales of Monkey Island* was released in 2009 for PC and the consoles popular at the time. They also tackled other films, resulting in titles such as Back to the Future: The Game and Jurassic Park: The Game. Things got really exciting for the developers, however, when the first Telltale game based on the zombie series The Walking Dead was released. For this project, the studio had significantly refined its graphic style and outdone itself in terms of the storyline. Instead of drawing on the series’ existing narrative, the developers introduced entirely new characters and, through a mix of fast-paced action sequences and difficult decisions, created what is arguably their most gripping game to date. The successful zombie series now consists of four main installments that continue the story, as well as a spin-off focusing on the series character Michonne.

Cult game: The Wolf Among Us

In addition to The Walking Dead game series, Telltale Games also turned other series and films into interesting games (e.g. Game of Thrones and Guardians of the Galaxy). However, one title has achieved cult status among gamers: The Wolf Among Us. No movie was adapted for the game; instead, the game designers used the characters from classic fairy tales. However, the big, bad wolf is not so bad at all, instead he is unceremoniously turned into Sheriff Bigby of Fabletown and has to solve a mysterious murder case there. All kinds of characters familiar from old folklore make an appearance, such as Snow White, Bluebeard and the Three Little Pigs. In the end, Bigby not only has to solve the case, but also make a serious decision that changes the ending. But no matter what decision is made, some things remain open in The Wolf Among Us. As a result, fans of the game quickly assumed that there would have to be a sequel.

The Wolf Among Us 2 is finally coming

As early as 2017, Telltale announced a sequel to the thrilling puzzle game, but 2018 brought a major disappointment: Telltale Games shut its doors indefinitely, and the unfinished project was put on hold. Since then, LCG Entertainment has acquired numerous Telltale licenses and made many of the older games available again. In addition, work on the sequel, *The Wolf Among Us 2*, has indeed resumed. This comes as a surprise to many, since the three other games in development were canceled at the same time. So perhaps *The Wolf Among Us* has survived solely because of its cult status.

No official release date has been announced yet, but The Wolf Among Us 2 will still be released in 2023. It is quite possible that this will actually be the last Telltale game. At least LCG Entertainment has not yet announced any further titles under the studio's umbrella.
