Video games have undergone a major transformation in the last decade. On the one hand, the variety of genres has grown enormously, and on the other, storylines and dramaturgy have become much more important. A good AAA title therefore now not only has bombastic gameplay and strong graphics, but also has a lot to offer in terms of story. Game developer Telltale brought out a series of exciting games in which players could influence the course of the story by making decisions and solving puzzles. The studio closed its doors in 2018 and that seemed to be the end of Telltale Games. However, LCG Entertainment bought up most of the licenses and will now even continue to develop an incomplete project: The Wolf Among Us 2. Will it be the last Telltale title?
Popular card games as a starting point
In 2005, the video game studio Telltale launched its production with a simple title that was able to attract a large number of players at the time. The game Telltale Texas Hold'em was just one of several virtual poker games that the developer released over the years. At the time, most casino games were still limited to land-based casinos, which is why the digital card game was so popular. Today, card games such as poker and blackjack are regularly played digitally, often using online casinos where real bets can be placed. Many platforms, however, give away free spins without a deposit, allowing new users to try out different games risk-free. The large game libraries include different variants of the popular table games, as well as numerous slots with different designs and themes. This was the developer studio's first step into the gaming world.
Development towards the adventure genre
Following its success in the poker sector, the studio tried its hand at the first episodic adventure games in which the storyline was the main focus. The developers ventured into popular series and films and adapted them into titles such as CSI: 3 Dimensions of Murder or Wallace & Gromit's Grand Adventures. With the support of LucasArts, the particularly successful game Tales of Monkey Island was brought to the PC and consoles available at the time in 2009. Other films were also tackled, including Back to the Future: The Game and Jurassic Park: The Game. However, things got really exciting for the developers when the first Telltale game for the zombie series The Walking Dead was launched. The studio had developed its graphic style enormously and outdone itself with the storyline. Instead of picking up on the story of the series, the developers introduced completely new characters and were able to create their most thrilling game to date with a mixture of fast-paced action sequences and difficult decisions. The successful zombie series now consists of four main parts that continue the story and a spin-off about the series character Michonne.
Cult game: The Wolf Among Us
In addition to The Walking Dead game series, Telltale Games also turned other series and films into interesting games (e.g. Game of Thrones and Guardians of the Galaxy). However, one title has achieved cult status among gamers: The Wolf Among Us. No movie was adapted for the game; instead, the game designers used the characters from classic fairy tales. However, the big, bad wolf is not so bad at all, instead he is unceremoniously turned into Sheriff Bigby of Fabletown and has to solve a mysterious murder case there. All kinds of characters familiar from old folklore make an appearance, such as Snow White, Bluebeard and the Three Little Pigs. In the end, Bigby not only has to solve the case, but also make a serious decision that changes the ending. But no matter what decision is made, some things remain open in The Wolf Among Us. As a result, fans of the game quickly assumed that there would have to be a sequel.
The Wolf Among Us 2 is finally coming
In 2017, Telltale announced the sequel to the exciting puzzle game, but then came the big disappointment in 2018: Telltale Games closed its doors until further notice and the unfinished project was put on ice. LCG Entertainment has since bought up numerous Telltale licenses and made many of the old games available again. Work on the sequel The Wolf Among Us 2 has actually resumed. This comes as a surprise to many, as the three other games in the pipeline were canceled at the same time. So perhaps The Wolf Among Us has only survived thanks to its cult status.
No official release date has been announced yet, but The Wolf Among Us 2 will still be released in 2023. It is quite possible that this will actually be the last Telltale game. At least LCG Entertainment has not yet announced any further titles under the studio's umbrella.
