Quick overview:
According to insiders, Microsoft plans to officially unveil the new Windows 9 operating system on September 30. The company has not yet commented on this and is also keeping quiet about the new features of the upcoming version. However, some probable changes are already doing the rounds.
Code name "Threshold": The new Windows version
One thing already seems certain: the version of Windows currently being developed under the codename "Threshold" will officially be called Windows 9, as Windows China has accidentally published. In addition, selected partners are already testing a preview version, which Microsoft has largely protected against leaks and has not yet provided with all features.
Nevertheless, details about the future operating system are leaking out, most recently numerous screenshots at "WinFuture". The software group is said to have made significant changes to the user interface:
- Start page: Microsoft relies on a clear separation. All notebook and PC users are shown a desktop interface with a start menu again. Only users of mobile devices will continue to see the tiles familiar from Windows 8. Microsoft is thus fulfilling a frequently expressed wish of notebook and PC owners who found the tiles to be user-unfriendly for these devices. This saves them the inconvenience of having to install the Start menu in a roundabout way[
- Removal of the charm bar: Rumor has it that the new version will no longer contain this element. This would please all those who find the charm bar annoying instead of helpful.
More frequent updates, innovative functions
Until now, Microsoft has only made extensive software revisions available as service packs at long intervals, sometimes only in a new version of Windows. In future, users can hope for regular updates at short intervals. The Group intends to publish improvements and new functions approximately every month with so-called rapid releases. In addition, the basic version of Windows 9 could already contain attractive features: On the one hand, there are growing indications that the version will have the Cortana voice assistance program. On the other hand, Windows could soon make it possible to set up various virtual desktops to work more effectively.
High added value for notebook and PC users
With Windows 8, Microsoft placed the tile look familiar from mobile devices on all computers: what was intended to be revolutionary turned out to be a dubious innovation. Many users of notebooks and PCs criticized this change and therefore stayed with Windows 7 or made extensive adjustments themselves. This user group in particular is likely to be eagerly awaiting the new version. At the same time, it promises improvements for everyone, for example with the regular updates. Interested parties will find out exactly what will change for the better on September 30. Experts date the sales launch to the beginning of 2015.
