Quick overview:

One of the most common computer problems: The following message appears as soon as the desktop (icons, taskbar and background image) become visible...

Windows-Tweaks has the solution! [By Sandro Villinger]

About the problem: This message appears when Windows tries to access a program that is no longer available on a data carrier during startup. Example: Windows is instructed to start the "Birthday Manager" program from floppy disk drive A: during startup. If you have removed this floppy disk, the instruction does not work and Windows gives you the message shown above.

Solution 1: Empty the temporary folders! Each time Windows is started, the two "temporary folders" of the operating system are checked in the background. These are folders in which programs store their temporary data. Unfortunately, many programs "forget" to remove their data there again afterwards, which is why references to drives that may no longer exist . First, follow this tip to activate the deletion of temporary files from the recycle bin!

Solution 2: Remove all references to disks that no longer exist from the autostart list! And this is how it works:

1. Hold down the "WINDOWS" key on your keyboard and tap "R". In the window that appears, enter the command "regedit" in:

Windows_Vista-268

2. Click on "OK" to start the system configuration program. Now click on the tab Windows_Vista-269 . Important is the column "Command", which you should expand:

Windows_Vista-270

In this column, look for entries that refer to entries that no longer exist, such as "G:Mailbox printing" or "A:Birthday manager". The example of a reader submission makes this clear:

Windows_Vista-271

The last entry "A:Birthday manager" refers to a diskette that is no longer available for this reader. Simply click to remove the checkmark in front of these entries! Confirm with "OK" and also place a check mark in front of "Do not show this message again" for the following message:

Windows_Vista-272

Then click on "Restart". The "No data carrier" error message should now have disappeared!

Sincerely,
Yours, Sandro Villinger
