Windows 98 - The MSDOS.SYS in focus: Secret switches and commands

November 25, 2013
Updated: April 14, 2022
Quick overview:

MSDOS.SYS - you can enter the following values

AutoScan=VALUEIf you enter the number 0 for VALUE, ScanDisk is deactivated in the event of an incorrect shutdown.1
BootDelay=VALUESome tools/programs set a value higher than 0 here for security reasons and delay the start process unnecessarily. Make sure that 0 is entered as the value!0, 1, 2
DblSpace=VALUEDoubleSpace is a DOS memory compression tool that is no longer used today. Prevent the DS driver from loading with DblSpace=0.1
DisableLog=VALUEA log is created in the Bootlog.txt; prevent the creation with VALUE=1.0
DoubleBuffer=VALUELarger IDE and SCSI hard disks gain speed from the double buffer. 1 ensures automatic detection and activation; 2 forces activation.0
Logo=VALUEActivates (1) or deactivates (0) the boot logo Windows 98/Me is started.1
SystemReg=VALUEChecks the WindowsRegistry on startup if the value has been set to 1. Recommendation: Set this value to 1 every 14 days for a system start and otherwise leave it at 0 so that the registry is not (unnecessarily) checked at every system start.1

NOTE FOR NEW PUBLICATION: This article was produced by Sandro Villinger and comes from the Windows Tweaks archive, which has been built up since the late 1990s.

Founded Windows Tweaks as a teenager in 2001, his helpful PC tricks made it Germany's most visited Windows site (at the time Sandro looked like this). He then went on to write for international publications such as PC-Praxis, Computerbild, PCWorld in the USA, IMTEST.de and Hifi.de. Sandro's main job is as Global Product Marketing Lead and Consultant for various global tech companies, including Microsoft, AVG, Avast, Nero, TeamViewer, Swiss IT Security Group and now currently in the fintech sector for Gendigital. But he can't get rid of his passion and shares his tweaks here again. Privately, he enjoys traveling the world and loves Asia, especially Japan, Singapore and Korea, but also natural places like Iceland and the Nordics. You can reach Sandro via e-mail.
