Windows 7: Cheaper as a discontinued model?

Quick overview:

Windows buttonWindows 8 is now finally in the starting blocks and is set to open up the world of smartphones and tablets for Microsoft in addition to the computer market. The opportunity to get hold of a license for the "discontinued model" Windows 7 at a reasonable price?

Windows XP was good, Vista was a disaster and with Windows 7 many XP owners held back and relied on the tried and tested. Now comes the next version of the world's most successful operating system and everything is new, more colorful and more APP.

Old software versions cheaper?

However, anyone hoping to get hold of a cheap Windows 7 license at the last minute will probably be disappointed. This is generally difficult with software. This is because many users upgrade, exchanging their old version for the new one at a lower price. In this way, manufacturers kill two birds with one stone: firstly, old versions disappear, which would otherwise flood the market as used software. Secondly, they prevent users from switching to other software, as the changeover would be significantly more expensive than an upgrade.

Only Windows 8 is cheap

This means that you only get cheap Windows 8. And only if you are in possession of an upgradeable version of Windows 7. However, it is not yet clear exactly what the conditions will be. However, Microsoft's model policy is changing. For some versions of Windows 7 (for example Ultimate) there will be no counterpart in the Windows 8 family. Time-consuming side effect: As it looks so far, Windows Ultimate owners will have to reinstall Windows 8 and will not be able to play it over the existing version. This means reinstalling all programs.

The alternative: hardware

However, if you still want to save money and are already speculating on a new computer, you could still find good deals now. Since the PC manufacturers get the licenses for the operating system very cheaply, as long as it is only sold in conjunction with a PV, you can get it for a small surcharge in many cases. And perhaps a large proportion of computer buyers are waiting for Windows 8 bolides and the manufacturers are "selling off" the old stock particularly cheaply.

  1. Windows 8 just looks too strange to me. I'm more than happy with the interface on my PC, I don't need a smartphone menu like that on the big screen.

  2. I only switched to Win7 a few months ago (from XP), so I'll keep my hands off Win8 for now. I'd rather wait until they've fixed the bugs in the next version and then see...
