Quick overview:
As I reported on May 29, I am running the brand new Windows 7 build 7137. This is a newer version than the release candidate (which still has the version number 7100), which is leaked to the internet by an anonymous source at Microsoft or a close MS partner.
I have been working productively with the new operating system on my main PC, a MacBook Pro (2009), for 2 days now.
Compared to the Windows 7 Release Candidate, there are no new functions or changes. Instead, the RC once again impresses with a performance boost. Build 7137 is able to keep up even under absolute full load. The following programs are currently running in parallel on my machine:
- Two virtual machines with Windows XP (uses 512 Mbytes of RAM) and Windows Vista (uses 1024 Mbytes of RAM).
- Browser window with 10 tabs, one of which is a web radio.
- A complete hard disk-wide spyware check with "Windows Defender".
- Hard disk test of a 320 GByte hard disk.
Despite this very high utilization of processor, memory and hard disk, Windows 7 Build 7137 was able to start all other programs such as Outlook, Word or Explorer windows without delay. XP, Vista and Windows 7 Beta/RC could not do this.
Conclusion
As Windows 7 has already reached "feature complete" status, Microsoft is focusing on fine-tuning performance and fixing problems in the final weeks and months before release. This is particularly evident with this very powerful "post" RC version!
Sincerely,
Sandro Villinger
