Quick overview:
It doesn't matter whether you are using a brand new computer or an old box: Windows will almost certainly crash once for every user. When this happens, the only thing left for the helpless user is to reach for the reset button, which inevitably leads to a time-consuming ScanDisk hard disk check at system startup. Only in the rarest of cases do you really find disk errors that are of a serious nature. In this case, ScanDisk can also be deactivated during startup.
We'll tell you how to do this here:
Windows 98 - Fix shutdown problem with Scandisk
1. Click on Start/Run and enter the command msconfig to start the system configuration program. Click on OK and the small tool will start immediately.
2. Now select More options and check the box next to Disable scandisk after incorrect shutdown. A restart is enough and the program will never bother you again from now on.
3. If the above solution did not work, the only remaining option is to manually access the Windows registry. Then, as described above, open the Run menu and this time enter regedit.
4. Navigate through the keys HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\ CurrentControlSet\Control\FileSystem and create a new value in the right-hand pane using the right-click menu New/DWORD value and create a new value with the name DisableScanDiskOnBoot.
5. Double-click on it and enter 1. You can now be sure that Windows no longer requires any checks.
