Windows 98 - Free up system resources with Office XP

November 25, 2013
Updated: December 6, 2021
Quick overview:

The file "ctfmon.exe is part of Office XP (or individual components such as Word 2002, Access 2002). Behind it is a program that monitors all open windows and then provides speech recognition, font recognition and other text input devices for them. Unfortunately, this tool (which gnaws at the computer's performance reserves due to its functions) cannot be excluded from the autostart by conventional means.

In rare cases, problems occur when you try to remove the "tool, but you can undo the changes if necessary. And this is how you switch off the tool:

1. Go to the Control Panel and open "Software. Now select your Office product and choose "Change. After a short time, a selection will appear where you can choose "Next, as the required option "Add or change features... is already selected.

2. Now click once on the "+ in front of "Shared Office Features, right-click on "Alternative user input and select "Not available from the menu that appears. After you have clicked on "Update at the bottom, the resource waster has disappeared.

Unfortunately, the drivers for the various input devices are still in memory. In the Control Panel, go to "Keyboard and select "Hardware. Now delete all drivers except "Standard keyboard 101/102 keys... (or the driver specifically selected for this).

.

The last step is to remove the DLL files that were left behind. With "Start > "Run a command line appears in which you can now enter "Regsvr32.exe /u msimtf.dll and confirm with "Ok. Then open the "Run menu again and this time enter "Regsvr32.exe /u Msctf.dll.

NOTE FOR NEW PUBLICATION: This article was produced by Sandro Villinger and comes from the Windows Tweaks archive, which has been built up since the late 1990s.

Founded Windows Tweaks as a teenager in 2001, his helpful PC tricks made it Germany's most visited Windows site (at the time Sandro looked like this). He then went on to write for international publications such as PC-Praxis, Computerbild, PCWorld in the USA, IMTEST.de and Hifi.de. Sandro's main job is as Global Product Marketing Lead and Consultant for various global tech companies, including Microsoft, AVG, Avast, Nero, TeamViewer, Swiss IT Security Group and now currently in the fintech sector for Gendigital. But he can't get rid of his passion and shares his tweaks here again. Privately, he enjoys traveling the world and loves Asia, especially Japan, Singapore and Korea, but also natural places like Iceland and the Nordics. You can reach Sandro via e-mail.
