Quick overview:
If you have opted for the new Service Pack 1 for Windows XP, your first encounters with the gigantic collection of updates, bug fixes and patches could be negative. In some cases, Windows XP cannot be updated to the latest version because the error message...
The integrity of the update.inf file could not be verified. Make sure that the cryptography service is running on the computer
...interferes with them. Normal hotfixes and updates are also affected. The cryptography service is responsible for digital signatures of files and the Update.inf must be one of them. Since the SP1 is now trying to access the service so that the Update.inf can be checked, this error message appears. You must now activate this service:
Avoid and resolve installation problems with Service Pack 1
1. Click on Start/Control Panel and click successively on Administration/Services.
2. A list opens up in which you can Cryptographic services double click and under Start type on Automatic click.
Now you can start the SP1 setup without any further difficulties!
If this tip did not work, I advise you to try the following, which is guaranteed to help:
1. Click in succession on Start/Execute and type in the command line cmd to open a DOS window.
2. Now type the command net stop cryptsvc and confirm with Enter. Then you now write ren %systemroot%\system32\catroot2 oldcatroot2 and confirm this as well.
Now try again with the SP1 installation.
