Some time ago I downloaded the "Run Program" gadget for the Windows Vista sidebar and it has been a constant companion ever since. Unfortunately, I couldn't find an official link or the author, so I decided to host the gadget here for the time being:

With this gadget, you can easily type commands such as "regedit" or "msconfig" (yes, readers of this page know these strings pretty well) without having to press "Windows key+R" or display the "Run" menu in the Start menu.
I just wanted to "preserve this download for posterity" as I was unable to trace this excellent little gadget!
