The Process Explorer presents a clear list of all applications that have been started and which ones are running. DLL files can be used. It also clearly distinguishes (in color if desired) the system's own processes (e.g. services) from the applications started by the user (programs such as Media Player, Internet Explorer, etc.).
If you are no longer sure what is behind an unknown process such as alg.exe, BTTray.exe etc. or would like to find out, you can also visit the Reger24 which has a gigantic selection of most known processes. Also Google.com often delivers excellent results if you enter the relevant process together with the .exe appendage. This is important for detecting and eliminating resource wasters, viruses, Trojans or dialers.
