Quick overview:
Windows records certain actions for later analysis (e.g. in the event of errors). These include crashes, hardware and software installations and changes to the system configuration. This logging requires a relatively large amount of system resources and should not be necessary for most people anyway. The function permanently writes to the hard disk and fragments it after a while.
To send the entire logging to the desert, proceed as follows:
1. Click on Start > Run and type regedit to open the Windows registry editor.
Win XP - Deactivate system log
2. Now navigate through the keys HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ Microsoft\WBEM\CIMOM and first double-click on EnableEvents in the right-hand pane. Replace the existing 1 with a 0.
3. Now click twice on the next value called Logging and change it to 0 as above.
4. The next value to be exchanged is called Backup Interval Threshold, which is best set to 100. This is the time interval in minutes at which the data is automatically recorded.
After you have restarted, you are now free of the logging burden. However, please take a look at the folder X:\WINDOWS\system32\WBEM\Logs\ and delete its contents. (X = your system partition)
