Microsoft Security Essentials 2.0 Beta released: Fast virus protection, now with network protection!

July 21, 2010
Updated: April 14, 2022
Quick overview:

Microsoft's free virus protection is entering its second round: Security Essentials 2.0 is designed to put less strain on Windows than before and now also protects against malware in the home or business network.

Better protection for networks and internet attacks
MSE 2.0 checks data packets that are sent via a WLAN or LAN connection - attacks via a network should be prevented. However, this protection only works under Windows Vista and Windows 7.

The new version of Security Essentials also checks for potentially dangerous scripts that are executed in Internet Explorer. Microsoft has not revealed whether the protection function will also be available for Firefox, Chrome and the like at a later date.

Less resource consumption?
Microsoft promises better performance in active protection and virus scanning - a problem that plagues many antivirus packages. They often slow down PCs and laptops noticeably. In practice, the promised performance boost compared to MSE 1.0 could not be confirmed: On average, MSE 2.0 consumed 75 Mbytes of RAM - as much as its predecessor. During a "quick check" of the hard disk, the processor was loaded with around 40-60%. Here, too, nothing has changed compared to its predecessor. Nevertheless: In my experience, MSE has established itself as by far the fastest and least disruptive virus scanner - only very few competing products can keep up with it.

Conclusion: Try it out!
If you don't have the beta yet, you can download it from the Microsoft Connect page simply click on "Downloads" on the left and download the appropriate version for 32-bit or 64-bit! Tip: Since yesterday there have been some problems downloading the files. It is therefore best to use Internet Explorer for downloading and use the "File Transfer Manager":

In my opinion, Microsoft Security Essentials belongs on every PC: If you don't like installing beta software, you should Give version 1.0 a chance.
