Quick overview:
Two worlds opened up with the introduction of Windows 8: The tile view was intended to simplify operation on touchscreens, while there is a separate view for desktop computer users. Apps have also been available on the computer since Windows 8. How can they be used in desktop mode? Here is a guide.
As a result, operation was also somewhat strange; quite a few users had the feeling that they had to use a mobile operating system on their PC. But with every new update, Microsoft takes another step towards its dissatisfied customers: In the current version of the operating system, Windows 8 apps can now also be opened from the desktop - so mouse users are spared the tile view.
Pin Windows 8 apps to the taskbar
You can simply pin your favorite apps to the taskbar in Windows 8.1. To achieve this, proceed as follows:
1. you must switch to the tile view.
2. right-click on all the apps you want to link.
3. in the context menu that then opens, select the "Pin to taskbar" entry.
Note: If this menu item is still missing, this is a sure sign that your operating system is not yet up to date.
Update Windows to the latest version
To install updates, simply press the Windows + R keys simultaneously. In the input field that then opens, enter "wuapp", press "ok" and then "Check for updates".
The system will then be updated immediately. The duration of the update depends heavily on the speed of your computer, the internet connection and the date of the last update.
However, the updates are not only worthwhile for making Windows 8 apps available from the desktop, but also for closing potential security gaps in the operating system.
Conclusion: Microsoft accommodates desktop users
If you don't have a tablet or notebook with a touchscreen, you will want to use Windows in the traditional way with a mouse - and this has not always been easy since the release of Windows 8. Although you may get used to the parallel worlds of desktop and tile view after a while, very few users find switching user interfaces intuitive.
With the latest update, Microsoft has taken another step towards further blurring the boundaries between the two worlds. In the current version of Windows 8.1, you can also pin the apps from the Metro view to the taskbar, which saves you having to switch to another window. If this option is not yet available to you, you should check the operating system for updates.
