Windows Me - Disable the PC Health hard disk protection to reduce the load on the system

November 26, 2013
Updated: December 6, 2021
Quick overview:

In addition to the many new features of Windows Me, Microsoft is also proud of its new system file protection called PC Health. It keeps the computer healthy by preventing the deletion of important files.

Unfortunately, even this protection is not secure enough to protect the Windows system. The resource consumption of PC Health should also not be underestimated, as it runs permanently in the background. It would also immediately lose out to professional programs in a comparison, which is why it is advisable to switch off this rather pointless function.

Please note that the Windows Update and Windows Help functions are related to PC Health and will no longer work after this procedure.

1. In the Start menu, click on Execute and enter the line C:\WINDOWS\Pchealth\Support\Pchsetup /UNINSTALL in. If drive letters or Windows folders are different, you must now add this.

2. To prevent errors, deactivate the already corrupted Windows Update by going to the Control Panel and double-clicking on Automatic updates click.

Here you select the entry Deactivate automatic updates and confirm with OK.

3. The Windows registration contains entries and keys that are still keeping PC Health alive. To delete these you must click on Start/Execute click and there regedit enter.

Now navigate to the keys one after the other HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD and delete the subkey VxDMon.

4. Keep the registry editor open and delete the following entries one by one:

Delete under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\ CurrentVersion\Uninstall the subkey PC Health.

Delete under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft also the subkey, which PC Health is called.

Select under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\CLASSES\ CLSID\{273380E8-1438-4B2C-95B0-713284FBC302}\ToolboxBitmap32 the entry Standard and delete it.

Remove the key PerUser_PCHealth under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ Software\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components.

Now click in the registry editor at the top on Edit/Search and type the word statemgr.exe in. Now delete all values found here.

5. Now click on Start/Execute and carry msconfig to open the system configuration program. As soon as it has started, switch to the Autostart and remove the entry PC Health.

6. Now PC Health has been switched off completely and you can finally work quickly and worry-free. Also the _Restore Folder under C:\ can now be easily deleted.

From now on there is nothing left of PC Health in the entire Windows Me system.

NOTE FOR NEW PUBLICATION: This article was produced by Sandro Villinger and comes from the Windows tweaks archive, which has been built up since the late 1990s.

Founded Windows Tweaks as a teenager in the 90s. His helpful PC tricks made it Germany's most visited Windows site (at the time Sandro looked like this). He then went on to write elsewhere, for example for PC-Praxis, Computer Bild and PCWorld in the USA. Microsoft also poached him from us. Now Sandro is back, finally sharing his tweaks here again.
