Quick overview:
Microsoft's new Windows 10 operating system is set to bring some interesting new features. In addition to the return of the classic Start menu, as known from Windows 7 and earlier versions, these include some new security solutions. They are designed to prevent hackers from taking control of your computer. An overview.
Multi-factor authentication
In the Windows Blog Microsoft has now announced that a new version of so-called "multi-factor authentication" is being developed for the operating system. This means that at least two factors must be fulfilled in order to log in to the computer. In addition to a classic PIN or fingerprint, this can also be the "trusted device" factor. Consequence: If a person tries to access data from an untrusted device, they will not be allowed to log in.
In addition, an authentication key could be stored in a secure folder on the smartphone. In order to crack the computer, the hacker would therefore not only have to have the user name and password, but also control over the owner's smartphone.
Alternatively, the user can unlock the system with their fingerprint if their computer has a fingerprint scanner.
Functions for business customers
It is clear that security is a top priority for Windows 10. For customers with special security requirements (e.g. banks), a function should be available that ensures that only programs certified by Microsoft can be installed - which effectively puts a stop to executable variants of malware.
It is not yet known whether the new security feature will actually be implemented in Windows 10. It is also conceivable that multi-factor authentication will only be available for the business version of the new operating system and for some Microsoft services. If the latter is the case, it will probably be a voluntary feature.
Windows 10 delights Windows 7 fans
Microsoft is keeping very quiet about its operating system, which is due to be released in the course of 2015, apart from a few blog posts. However, it is clear that, in addition to new (security) features, some old functions will also be available again. This news should be particularly pleasing for those who prefer the design of classic Windows versions. In addition to the old Start menu, the classic Windows desktop will also be available.
And the operating system is also interesting for companies - after all, Windows 10 is designed to focus on security.
