Windows 2000 - Hide all drives in My Computer

November 29, 2013
Updated: December 6, 2021
Quick overview:

If you do not want anyone to view the contents of your drives, I recommend that you deactivate all entries in My Computer. The standard programs can still be executed and your data will all be retained - only access to it will be denied.

1. Click one after the other on Start > Execute and type in the command line regedit program. The program that now appears is reminiscent of the familiar Windows Explorer.

2. Double-click through the following keys HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ Policies\Explorer and click with the right mouse button in the right-hand pane and select New > DWORD value.

3. This new value appears. After giving it the name NoDrives double-click on it. In the following line, enter 3fffffffff (There are 7 f) in. After they have been Ok confirmed and restarted, your workstation looks like this:

To undo this setting, simply delete the created value.

NOTE FOR NEW PUBLICATION: This article was produced by Sandro Villinger and comes from the Windows Tweaks archive, which has been built up since the late 1990s.

Founded Windows Tweaks as a teenager in the 90s. His helpful PC tricks made it Germany's most visited Windows site (at the time Sandro looked like this). He then went on to write elsewhere, for example for PC-Praxis, Computer Bild and PCWorld in the USA. Microsoft also poached him from us. Now Sandro is back, finally sharing his tweaks here again. For a stress-free digital everyday life. You can reach Sandro via e-mail.
