Quick overview:
From October 31, PC manufacturers will stop selling computers with pre-installed Windows 7. Microsoft had already stopped selling Windows 7 software packages in 2013. What does the sales stop mean for users? For whom is it still worth buying a computer with Windows 7?
Security updates until 2020: users need not fear any dangers
On October 31, the time of Windows 7 comes to an end. A few months later, in January 2015, Microsoft will also discontinue basic support. This means that the programmers will no longer develop any new functions for this version. However, users will receive regular security updates until 2020.
Nobody has to fear that they are taking a risk with Windows 7.
Therefore, anyone who does not appreciate the successor version Windows 8 can buy a computer with this version without hesitation until the end of Windows 7 on October 31, 2014. The price may also speak in favor of such a decision: Many retailers are offering computers with Windows 7 at particularly low prices.
Windows 10 comes onto the market in 2015
If you prefer the tile look of Windows 8 instead, you should of course purchase a computer with the latest operating system. However, many users struggle with this version. Many complain about the handling. For this reason, nobody should buy Windows 8 without prior information. Those interested should test it out.
If you don't like Windows 8, we recommend the following alternatives:
- If the purchase of a new computer is urgent, users should buy a computer with the old system until the end of Windows 7 on October 31, 2014. This strategy is also recommended for all those who are basically satisfied with Windows 7.
- Everyone else should wait until next year. Microsoft has responded to the fierce criticism and massively overhauled the user interface. The company has reintroduced the start menu and abolished the familiar Windows 8 start screen with tiles. Microsoft is also likely to incorporate some new functions, such as the Cortana voice assistant. The company will be releasing more details shortly.
Windows 7, 8 or 10? A question of requirements
In a few weeks, the distribution of Windows 7 will come to an end, so some users will need to take action soon. This applies to anyone who wants to get a new computer with Windows 7. Anyone who can cope with the fundamentally different design of Windows 8 does not need to observe this deadline. If you don't need a new computer at the moment, you can also wait for the release of Windows 10.
